the kodachrome story.

Kodachrome Basin was the first place I ever flew my drone for sunset.

I remember the nervous excitement as it lifted off the ground,

climbing higher with each gentle press upward on my throttle.

Funny how the places that change you,

rarely announce themselves when you're there.

When I got to Kodachrome state park, I remember the spoiled side of me came out. I was disappointed in the landscape. Coming from Snow Canyon State Park and Zion National Park, this landscape was simpler and smaller. Now thinking back, that was so harsh and cruel because this landscape is so magnificent in its own way! I just had to realize this looking from above. My perspective shifted immediately when I flew and got a mind-shift. My eyes were opened and I noticed all the things I so quickly overlooked before.

The way the sun’s rays lit up the rocks so that they were glowing orange.

The way my shadow created a geometrical display.

The way the road I drove on revealed how mesmerizing it was, winding through the rock formations.

The way the pastel pink sky contrasted with the orange and green landscape.

Looking back, it wasn't really about the expanse of this park or the ‘wow’ factor I wanted to feel, it was about discovering a new way to see this particular landscape.

Kodachrome will always be one of those places for me. Not because it was the most famous stop, but because it marked the beginning of seeing landscape from a new perspective.
